BAMS duration, study and admission route

BAMS duration, study and admission route
Course factWhat it means for your choice
Full qualificationBachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery: an undergraduate Ayurveda programme.
Duration5½ years: 4½ years of teaching and training followed by a one-year internship under the NCISM undergraduate Ayurveda framework.
Academic structureThree professional stages precede internship. The applicable NCISM curriculum and your batch’s university calendar determine teaching and examination schedules.
What distinguishes the courseAyurveda study includes its foundational concepts and classical texts alongside the prescribed scientific and clinical curriculum. Sanskrit learning is part of the transitional preparation; do not treat BAMS as another name for MBBS.
Entrance and counsellingNEET-UG is the entrance route; AYUSH counselling uses AACCC or the relevant state authority. MCC registration for MBBS/BDS is not a substitute.
College permissionVerify the exact BAMS college and intake-year permission, together with its awarding university and attached teaching-hospital arrangements.

Sources: NCISM’s Undergraduate Ayurveda Education Regulations, 2022 and NCISM’s BAMS transitional curriculum. A national course duration does not establish an individual college’s current permission, fees, hospital activity or stipend.

START WITH WHAT MATTERS

Check the route, permission and learning environment.

Do not carry MBBS counselling assumptions into an Ayurveda application.

01

NEET and eligibility

BAMS admission uses NEET-UG, with academic and other eligibility conditions also applying. Consult the current bulletin and relevant AYUSH admission instructions for your category.

02

AYUSH counselling

Identify whether AACCC or the relevant state authority handles your intended seat. Registrations, choices and reporting follow the applicable AYUSH process.

03

Programme permission

Check the exact institution and academic year against NCISM permission information and relevant notices. An older listing should not be treated as confirmation for a new intake.

01 / ADMISSION PLANNING

Understand what you want to study.

Read the course outline and talk to the institution about the subjects, teaching approach and clinical component. Consider whether the discipline matches your interests and the professional path you want to explore.

Avoid choosing solely on a familiar medical label or an informal comparison with another qualification. Ask for clarity about the qualification awarded and consult the relevant regulator for professional requirements. Different healthcare programmes should not be presented as interchangeable.

  • Review the curriculum rather than only the admission advertisement.
  • Ask how classroom study connects to supervised clinical learning.
  • Check further-study and registration requirements through official sources.

02 / ADMISSION PLANNING

Examine the hospital and the current record.

Ask which teaching hospital supports the programme, how clinical postings are organised and what student supervision looks like. Facilities should be considered alongside access to practical learning and the institution's published information.

Review permission information for the intended academic year and read any relevant qualification, restriction or updated notice. A general college directory is a research starting point, not proof of permission or available seats. Where records seem inconsistent, seek clarification from the responsible authority before applying.

  • Match the college name, campus and programme precisely.
  • Check the date and academic year on each permission document.
  • Ask about hospital postings, practical teaching and internship arrangements.

03 / ADMISSION PLANNING

Keep your application and budget aligned.

Prepare a separate calendar for the AYUSH counselling process that applies to you. Read registration, choice-filling and reporting instructions carefully; a completed MBBS counselling registration is not a substitute.

Compare tuition with accommodation, materials, deposits and other compulsory charges. Ask for the fee order and the applicable withdrawal rules before paying. Campus Mantra can help organise the questions and documents, but the authority's official allotment and institution's requirements govern admission.

  • Check category and domicile evidence where applicable.
  • Separate official counselling charges from college and advisory charges.
  • Save the relevant notices, submitted choices and payment receipts.

04 / ADMISSION PLANNING

Identify the AYUSH counselling authority.

AACCC describes its responsibilities as including All India Quota seats in government and government-aided colleges, deemed universities and specified central or national institutions. State counselling covers seats within the relevant state authority’s jurisdiction. Use the current scheme and seat matrix to identify the exact route for your option.

Create a separate AYUSH application record even if you are also considering other healthcare courses. Note the registration portal, applicable category, documents and actions required. Check the session inside each notice and retain the latest amendment. Similar labels across counselling systems do not mean their payment or reporting rules are identical.

See AACCC’s official introduction and current UG notices for the central AYUSH route.

05 / ADMISSION PLANNING

Look at the learning behind the course name.

Ask for the subject outline and assessment pattern. Discuss how foundational study, practical sessions and supervised clinical learning are connected across the programme. Reading these details helps you decide whether the discipline matches your interests rather than relying on a comparison made in an advertisement.

For a campus conversation, prepare questions about teaching language, library resources, practical demonstrations and support for unfamiliar terminology. Speak to students at different stages about how they organise their study. Use what you hear to identify further questions; individual experiences are not a substitute for the official curriculum.

06 / ADMISSION PLANNING

Save the permission record you rely on.

Find the institution’s exact name and campus in the relevant NCISM information. Match the programme and intended academic year, then read conditions or subsequent notices. Keep a copy of the source with the date you checked it so you can revisit it before choice submission.

Do not assume a previous year’s permission or a university affiliation page answers every current admission question. If the institution’s claim differs from the regulator’s or counselling authority’s record, ask for clarification before proceeding. A directory entry is a starting point for research, not an allotment or a guarantee of available seats.

07 / ADMISSION PLANNING

Use an office or campus visit to resolve questions.

Ask how students reach the teaching hospital, how practical postings are supervised and how concerns are raised. Clarify hostel arrangements, meals, travel between facilities and access to study spaces. These details affect both the daily experience and the amount a family needs to plan.

Record answers under consistent headings for every college. Where a claim matters to your decision, ask where it appears in the institution’s published material. Keep academic fit and practical living arrangements visible together; an affordable tuition figure can still sit alongside travel or accommodation needs that do not suit you.

08 / ADMISSION PLANNING

Check the full commitment before joining.

Bring tuition, accommodation, deposits, materials and travel into one budget. Mark which charges recur and which are one-time payments. Ask for written refund and withdrawal conditions and check the payment recipient. Keep counselling payments separate from institutional fees and any advisory-service charge.

Before reporting, compare your document folder with the current official list, including applicable category or domicile evidence. Save your submitted preferences and acknowledgement records. Discuss your course priorities, locations and budget with Campus Mantra so support starts with the decision you need to make, while eligibility and allotment remain with the responsible authorities.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A little more clarity.

Is BAMS counselling the same as MBBS counselling?

No. BAMS follows the applicable AYUSH counselling route. AACCC handles specified seats, while other seats may be handled by state authorities. Check the route before registering.

Can an old college-permission list confirm my intake?

No. Verify the academic year, programme and relevant updated notices. Permission information from a previous intake should not be assumed to apply unchanged.

Does a higher budget guarantee admission?

No. Eligibility, rank, category, vacancies, choices and the counselling rules still apply. A fee quotation or verbal assurance does not replace an official allotment.
